Overview:

Primary inflammation of the heart muscle and is a type of primary acquired cardiomyopathy.

Cause:

– Viral infiltrate (most common)
– Hypersensitivity immune response
– Parasitic infection

Morphology:

Acute:
– Mononuclear infiltrates
– Edematous
– Myocyte damage (by mononuclear cell)

Chronic:
– Fibrosis
– Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Diagnosis:

Clinical Findings:
– Arrhythmias
– Symptoms due to cardiac failure (dyspnea, malaise, cardiogenic shock)

ECG Findings:
– Hyopcontractility (low voltage QRS)

Treatment:

– Supportive – bedrest (acute cases resolve within weeks)
– Digoxin and diuretcs
