Cardiac Tamponade

Overview:

Hemodynamic (cardiac filling) compromise, caused by fluid in the pericardial space.

Cause:

-Trauma
-Aortic Dissection
-Surgical Procedures

Diagnosis:

Clinical Findings:
Beck’s Triad:
1. Hypotension
2. Increased JVP
3. Distant heart sounds (due to extra fluid)

Pulsus paradoxus – decreased BP on inspiration

ECG Findings:
Low voltage – due to electrical buffer (blood)
Electrical Alternans – septum movement causes axis deviation

Treatment:

Pericardiocentesis
